Plan Ahead

Best Time to Visit

East Africa offers exceptional wildlife viewing year-round, but understanding the seasons unlocks the difference between a good safari and a life-changing one.

Great for Birding
Jan – Feb · Short Dry

Excellent birding with migratory species present. Calving season in the Serengeti draws predators. Fewer tourists.

Top Pick
Jun – Oct · Long Dry

The premier wildlife-viewing season. Sparse vegetation, concentrated waterholes, and the Great Migration river crossings.

  • Great Migration

  • all parks open
  • clear skies
Budget Season
Nov – May · Green

Lower rates with fewer crowds. Lush green landscapes and newborn animals. Some roads can be challenging after heavy rain.

Year-Round
Dec – Jan · Gorillas

Stay Well on Safari

Health & Safety

East Africa is safe and welcoming for travellers. Taking the right precautions means you can focus entirely on the experience.

🦟

Malaria Prevention

High Priority

Malaria is present in most East African parks. Take prescribed prophylactics, use 30%+ DEET, wear long sleeves at dusk, and sleep under a net. Consult your GP at least 6 weeks before departure.

💉

Vaccinations

High Priority

Yellow fever certificate is required for entry from endemic countries. Recommended: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus, Rabies (if trekking). Consult a travel health clinic.

💧

Food & Water Safety

Important

Drink only bottled or treated water. Avoid ice in drinks outside lodges. Lodges and camps provide safe filtered water. Fruit and vegetables washed in clean water are safe.

🛡️

Travel Insurance

High Priority

Comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation is mandatory for all our safaris. Ensure your policy covers wildlife activities, gorilla trekking, and emergency airlifts.

⛰️

Altitude

Good to Know

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi (1,160–2,607m) and Volcanoes NP can be strenuous. Allow time to acclimatise. Discuss fitness requirements with our team before booking.

🦁

Wildlife Safety

Important

Always follow your guide's instructions around wildlife. Never exit a vehicle in open game areas without permission. Maintain recommended distances. Our guides are trained in wildlife safety protocols.

☀️

Sun & Heat

Good to Know

Equatorial sun is intense year-round. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen daily, stay hydrated, wear a hat, and rest during peak heat (12–3pm) when wildlife activity is lower anyway.

🚨

Emergency Contacts

Good to Know

All guests receive our 24/7 emergency contact number. Medical facilities are available in Kampala, Nairobi, and Arusha. AMREF Flying Doctors provides air evacuation across the region.
